General Information

  • OSA is a sleep disorder where one's airway repeatedly becomes blocked during sleep, reducing or completely stopping airflow. This can lead to poor sleep quality and other health issues.

  • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy is considered the gold standard treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP machines use mild air pressure to keep airways open while you sleep by filtering and pressurizing air and delivering it through a mask and hose.

  • CPAP therapy is the most effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. It can significantly improve sleep quality, reduce daytime sleepiness, and lower the risk of serious health issues such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Many patients experience a dramatic improvement in their overall quality of life, including increased energy levels and better concentration.

Device Setup

  • Follow the instructions provided with your device. If you do not have your user manual, click here. Generally, you'll need to connect the hose to the machine and the mask, fill the humidifier chamber with distilled water, and plug the device into a power source. Adjust the mask for a comfortable fit and turn on the machine. If you need further guidance, please refer to the video specific to your device - click here.

  • Place your CPAP machine on a stable surface near your bed, ensuring it is below head level to prevent condensation from entering the tubing. Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

  • A properly fitting mask should be snug but not too tight. There should be no air leaks, and it should feel comfortable.

    • Perform the Mask Fit Test in your Patient Menu. For nasal pillows, ensure you do not feel air coming out from around your nostrils.

    • Nasal and full face masks should not leak air anywhere they touch the skin. The most common sites for leaks include the bridge of the nose or along the bottom of each mask. If a leak is present, the mask may need to be tightened a bit (remember, masks are NOT designed to be worn very tightly) or perhaps the cushion is a size too large. This may mean the mask is not adjusted tight enough or that the cushion size is too large.

    • Verify when you last received the cushion/headgear and how often they are being cleaned. As a cushion ages, it may appear clean, but the natural "stickiness" disappears, and it begins to look shiny and does not seal unless additional pressure is applied.

Usage and Maintenance

  • Use your CPAP device every night and during naps to ensure you receive the full therapeutic benefits. Consistent use is crucial for managing your obstructive sleep apnea and improving your overall health.

  • Each piece of CPAP equipment requires different cleaning frequencies to ensure optimal performance and hygiene:

Mask: Clean daily with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and let air dry. This prevents the buildup of oils and bacteria.

Headgear and Straps: Wash weekly with warm, soapy water to remove oils and sweat. Rinse thoroughly and let air dry.

Tubing: Clean weekly with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and hang to dry to prevent moisture buildup and bacterial growth.

Humidifier Chamber: Empty and rinse daily with warm water. Clean weekly with warm, soapy water or a mixture of vinegar and water to prevent mold and mineral deposits.

Disposable Filters: Replace every 2 weeks or more frequently if they appear dirty.

Reusable Filters: Clean weekly by rinsing with water and let air dry completely before reinserting. Replace every 6 months or as needed.

  • The FDA provides general recommendations for replacing CPAP supplies to ensure optimal performance and hygiene. While specific timelines can vary based on manufacturer guidelines and individual use, the typical replacement schedule is as follows:

    CPAP Mask: Every 3 months

    Mask Cushion/Pillows: Every 1-2 months

    CPAP Tubing: Every 3 months

    Disposable Filters: Every 2 weeks

    Reusable Filters: Every 6 months

    Humidifier Chamber: Every 6 months
